Let’s talk about Sports in Japanese
For today’s blog, let’s talk about sports. I am not a sporty
person, but I know how to play some sports. I can play volleyball and
badminton. I can also play basketball and table tennis. I also love playing
chess when I was a kid though I am not good at it.
Anyway, Sports in Japanese
is スポーツ read as Supo-tsu.
Sports Day or スポーツの日(Supo-tsu no
hi) is a National Holiday in Japan held every Second Monday of October.
Every school in Japan holds an annual Field day orうんどうかい (運動会) read as
Undou Kai during Sports day.
Sumo (相撲) is the
National sport of Japan while Baseball is one of the most popular foreign
sports.
Let’s check my favorite sports:

Note:
* Japanese Chess, しょうぎ (将棋), is different from the game Chess I played when I was young. I only included it in the list so that everyone will know what Japanese chess is.
** I included Softball (ソフトボール) in the list under Baseball even though the two sports are different. I love baseball but I only play softball.
*** Figure skating can be written either スケート or フィギュアスケート.
**** Japanese Archery originated during Feudal Japan. The Kyuudou bows are large, long, and asymmetrical compared to the western Archery.
More sports to come in the next blog.
